Glycogen resynthesis and muscle repair must be started as fast as possible to ensure optimal recovery. Most people I know who are disappointed with their bodybuilding results are. The easiest way is to use a standard workout plan. Have you ever felt like you’ve not only stopped seeing results but have lost progress towards your fitness goals? You might be the victim of a common condition known as overtraining. Overtraining occurs when the frequency and intensity of training exceeds the body’s ability to rest and recover. In an overtrained state, athletes experience a slew of negative symptoms ranging from muscle atrophy and loss of motivation, to decreased immune system functioning and moodiness. When motivation is high and results are desired fast, trainees can find themselves losing muscle mass and gaining fat, despite a consistently demanding exercise routine. To prevent this paradox, it is crucial to get plenty of rest to recover from intense workouts. It is also important to follow a diet that includes adequate amounts of macronutrients, especially carbohydrates. Providing your body with nutrients and rest will enable the muscles to repair and grow. Although it may seem counterintuitive, longer workouts aren’t always better. Eliminate marathon sessions from your regimen and you will see more results, not less. Implement these seven strategies to ensure that you avoid overtraining and continue to see progress. Eat enough carbohydrates. According to a study published in in the Journal of Sports Sciences, “the best treatment . Carbohydrates are required for muscle recovery and energy, and when absent from a diet, can cause your body to enter a state of muscle catabolism in which your body uses muscle mass for energy. Take two. Without proper rest, people can easily enter a state of overtraining. Time out of the gym is just as important, if not more important, than time in the gym. Many people who experience overtraining make a common mistake: they train even harder, pushing themselves deeper into the overtraining trap. When results slow and performance decreases, it’s best to take some time out of the gym and reassess your program. Start by taking two days off completely. Set your limits. After about an hour, testosterone levels in your body begin to dip and levels of the stress hormone cortisol begin to rise. Since testosterone is responsible for muscle growth and maintenance and cortisol can cause you to put on weight, this is the complete opposite of what we want to happen. Three- hour marathon workouts are a sure way to increase your likelihood of overtraining. Keep your sessions under an hour for best results. Snooze more. In addition to taking time off exercise, getting an appropriate amount of sleep each night can help you recover faster and repair muscle tissue. A study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine listed rest as “central to recovery” from overtraining. The amount of rest varies for each individual and depends on training loads, but to be safe, aim for 7- 9 hours of sleep per night. Massage it out. Getting a deep tissue massage can loosen up tight muscles, increase blood flow, and rid the body of built- up lactic acid and other toxins. Regular massages will keep your body functioning optimally. Get your priorities straight. Altering the intensity of your workout in preplanned stages—known as periodization—can help prevent overtraining by allowing your body to recover, as your muscles heal during less intense periods. Embrace change. New exercises can mean new growth. By introducing new exercises and rep ranges into your routine, you keep it fresh and force your body to adapt to new stimuli, ultimately leading to gains. Little did I know all that running wasn’t doing me much good anyway. These days I mostly strength train or train with kettlebells. Once I commit to taking a few days off I always feel refreshed and ready to get back at it. I seriously just love strength training. I love the way I feel after a good strength training session. I love seeing myself get stronger over time. I love what strength training does for my body. But sometimes too much of a good thing is bad, huh? I mentioned this past Friday that I was taking a few days off from strength training. I am not going to go into crazy detail about overtraining because you can read about that in the well- written articles below, but basically I was feeling like crap, my body was aching and I wasn’t getting any leaner. If anything I was getting less lean despite continued workouts and eating clean. I never really felt like training and most of my workouts kind of stunk. It was time for an overtraining recovery plan before I got really burnt out. Overtraining Articles: My last hard workout was last Wednesday morning. I did a little Becoming Bulletproof Friday and some swings and snatches followed by a walk with my best bud yesterday, but that was it. No heavy lifting at all. I’m training this morning with a new program. My hubby is helping me again to ensure that I’m mixing things up a bit more than I have been. I always want to deadlifts and pullups (and I will continue to do so), but I also need to work on the things that I’m not good at and don’t love as much. I always love starting a new program – it feels like a fresh start! In other news, I had a lovely visitor this weekend! We had a great day in Boston on Friday and my RKC buddy finally got to meet CJ on Saturday. I also taught her how to deadlift during nap time on Saturday! Run a marathon like my friend? Somewhere in between?

The Importance of Vitamin C - Ultimate Guide to Vitamin CVitamin C is important to all animals, including humans, because it is vital to the production of collagen. Vitamin C is also important because it helps protect the fat- soluble vitamin A and vitamin E as well as fatty acids from oxidation. Vitamin C prevents and cures the disease scurvy, and can be beneficial in the treatment of iron deficiency anemia. Collagen is the most ubiquitous substance in the body because it is the most abundant of the fibers contained in connective tissue. Connective tissue gives our body form and supports our organs. Importance Of Vitamin. It has the chemical formula Mg(C 18 H. Vitamin C is present in the lung. The best way to get the daily requirement of essential vitamins, including vitamin C, is to eat a balanced diet that contains a variety of foods from the food guide. ![]() To give you an idea of how important collagen is, here is a list of the five types of collagen, and where they are used in the body. Type 1 - Connective tissue of skin, bone, teeth, tendons, ligaments, fascia, organ capsules. Type 2 - Cartilage. Type 3 - Connective tissue of our organs (liver, spleen, kidneys, etc.)Type 4, 5 - The separating layer between epithelial and endothelial cells as well as between skeletal or smooth muscle cells (basal lamina), kidney glomeruli, lens capsule, and Schwann and glial cells of the nervous system. As you can see, collagen is everywhere in the body, and vitamin C plays a role in the formation of collagen. So, how is vitamin C involved in collagen synthesis? When collagen is produced, there is a complex series of events, some occurring inside of the cell, and some outside of the cell. Vitamin C is active inside of the cell, where it hydroxylates (adds hydrogen and oxygen) to two amino acids: proline and lysine. This helps form a precursor molecule called procollagen that is later packaged and modified into collagen outside of the cell. Without vitamin C, collagen formation is disrupted, causing a wide variety of problems throughout the body. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Experts have warned that “healthy people should not take aspirin to prevent a heart attack because routinely taking the drug does them more harm than good,” according to The Daily Telegraph. Several newspapers covered this publication, which is not new research but a review of the existing evidence and expert opinion. It concluded that, for healthy people, the potential harms of aspirin may outweigh its potential benefits. The question of whether healthy people should take aspirin as a preventative measure is a difficult one due to the fine balance between benefits and risks. At present, doctors decide whether patients should routinely use aspirin on a case- by- case basis. Future updates of treatment guidelines, such as those produced by NICE (National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence), will take into account emerging evidence such as the studies highlighted in this review. Where did the story come from? The review article was published in the Drug and Therapeutics Bulletin (DTB), a journal produced by the BMJ Group. This journal publishes evaluations of treatments and practical advice for healthcare professionals. The DTB is independent from the government and regulatory authorities, the pharmaceutical industry and commercial sponsorship. The articles in the journal are not attributed to individual authors but are produced by a group of experts, commentators and editors. Articles are commissioned from expert authors, edited and then made available for critical review by selected commentators. These include the advisory council and editorial board of the DTB, experts in the field, GPs, pharmacists, nurses, pharmaceutical company representatives (if the company’s drug is discussed), national healthcare bodies (the MHRA and BNF), relevant consumer and patient groups, and a lawyer. Relevant comments are then integrated into the article. The news reports that covered this article are generally accurate and balanced. What kind of research was this? This narrative review examined whether people who have not had a cardiovascular event (such as a heart attack) should use low- dose aspirin to prevent one from occurring. This is known as primary prevention. ![]() ![]() ![]() The review takes into account current research evidence and opinion from various commentators. The review is not a systematic review, which means that it may have missed some relevant evidence. What did the research involve? The DTB reviews mainly include fully published research, with the most weight given to double- blind randomised controlled trials, systematic reviews or meta- analyses published in peer- reviewed journals. These study designs generally produce the most robust evidence for the effects of treatments, so relying on these types of study is appropriate. ![]() ![]() ![]() The conclusions of the article are based on a weighted assessment of the evidence identified and the opinions gathered. Although literature searches may be carried out as part of the drafting of DTB articles, and commentators can identify any missing evidence, these articles are not systematic reviews and may miss some relevant research. What were the basic results? The review notes that aspirin is not specifically licensed for use as primary prevention in the UK. However, various guidelines from bodies including NICE and its Scottish equivalent (SIGN) recommend low- dose aspirin for primary prevention in certain groups of people. In general, aspirin is recommended for people at higher risk of cardiovascular events due to risk factors such as type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure. The article discusses evidence that was published before these guidelines as well as more recent evidence. Evidence published before the guidelines included the following: One meta- analysis of 1. The majority of people in this analysis had already had a cardiovascular event. The study found that, compared to control, antiplatelet treatment reduced the risk of serious vascular events (from 1. The researchers recommended that taking 7. Four meta- analyses looked specifically at aspirin for primary prevention. These reached various conclusions, but in general suggested that the potential benefits of aspirin in reducing cardiovascular events should be weighed up against the potential increase in risk of bleeding. Some concluded that aspirin might be beneficial for people whose risk of cardiovascular events was judged to be above a certain threshold level. One systematic review concluded that aspirin did not reduce the likelihood of stroke or cardiovascular events as a whole in patients with elevated blood pressure but no previous cardiovascular disease. It recommended that aspirin should not be used as primary prevention in this group. One randomised controlled trial (RCT) found that aspirin did not reduce the risk of death, heart attack or stroke in people with diabetes. Some of these people already had cardiovascular disease. More recent evidence included the following: One meta- analysis pooled six RCTs which assessed aspirin for primary prevention in 9. The analysis used data from individual patients within each trial, which has advantages over using pooled results from each trial. It found that aspirin reduced the risk of serious vascular events from 0. This reduction did not vary significantly between people who had different ages, gender, blood pressure, history of diabetes or predicted risk of coronary heart disease. ![]() ![]() However, aspirin also increased the chance of having a major gastrointestinal or other bleed (not in the brain) from 0. These figures mean that for every 3,3. Aspirin did not affect the risk of death overall or of death due to coronary heart disease. It also had no effect on the risk of stroke. The researchers concluded that taking aspirin for primary prevention was likely to have only a small effect on the risk of serious vascular events, and this would be at least partly offset by a small increase in the risk of serious bleeds. Behind the Headlines covered this meta- analysis on aspirin use in an earlier article. One meta- analysis looked at aspirin for primary prevention in men and women separately. Do detox diet products work? It concluded that treatment with aspirin for an average of 6. This was offset by an extra 2. Two RCTs looked at aspirin for primary prevention in people with diabetes. One found no reduction in death from coronary heart disease or stroke and the other found no difference in events related to atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries). How did the researchers interpret the results? Related to Weight Loss & Obesity. Diet & Weight Management; Fitness & Exercise; Food & Recipes. Prescription Weight Loss Drugs. Commercial capability and. Diet; Fitness; Healthy skin & hair. Diabetes UK is the leading UK charity that cares for, connects with and campaigns on behalf of all people affected by diabetes. Positive tales from the NHS. ![]() The article concludes, “the currently available evidence does not justify the routine use of low- dose aspirin for the primary prevention of CVD . Although steps would have been taken to identify and include the most relevant evidence, some relevant studies may have been missed. The question of whether apparently healthy people should take aspirin as a preventative measure is difficult to answer due to the fine balance between benefits and risks. Treatment guidelines (such as those issued by NICE) are produced based on the best evidence available at the time. These guidelines are revised as new evidence becomes available, and when they are next updated they could potentially come to similar conclusions as those reached in this review. Until then, doctors will continue to make recommendations about taking aspirin by weighing up the balance of benefits and risks for individual cases. Plants in the drug family, Solanaceae (nightshades) are an important causative factor in arthritis in sensitive people. This family includespotato (Solanum tuberosum L.),tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum L.),eggplant (Solanum melongena L.),tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.), andpeppers (Capsicum sp.) of all kinds except the black pepper (family, Piperaceae). A buildup of cholinesterase inhibiting glycoalkaloids and steroids from consumption and/or use (tobacco) of the nightshades and from other sources such as caffeine and some pesticides (organophosphates and carbamates) may cause inflammation, muscle spasms, pain, and stiffness. Osteoarthritis appears to be a result of long- term consumption and/or use of the Solanaceae which contain naturally the active metabolite, vitamin D3, which in excess causes crippling and early disability (as seen in livestock). Rigid omission of Solanaceae, with other minor diet adjustments, has resulted in positive to marked improvement in arthritis and general health. Nightshades Norman F. Childers, Ph. Beulens JW, Bots ML, Atsma F, Bartelink ML, Prokop M, Geleijnse JM, Witteman JC, Grobbee DE, van der Schouw YT. Source. J. Beulens@umcutrecht. Abstract. This may be due to different effects of vitamin K(1) (phylloquinone) and vitamin K(2) (menaquinone, MK), but few studies included both. METHODS: We investigated the association of intake of phylloquinone and menaquinone, including its subtypes (MK4- MK1. Phylloquinone and menaquinone intake was estimated using a food- frequency questionnaire. RESULTS: Sixty- two percent (n=3. Phylloquinone intake was not associated with coronary calcification with a relative risk (RR) of 1. Menaquinone intake was associated with decreased coronary calcification with an RR of 0. CI: 0. 6. 5- 0. 9. CONCLUSION. Adequate menaquinone intakes could therefore be important to prevent cardiovascular disease. Nutr Metab Cardiovasc Dis. Sep; 1. 9(7): 5. 04- 1. Epub 2. 00. 9 Jan 2. A high menaquinone intake reduces the incidence of coronary heart disease. Gast GC, de Roos NM, Sluijs I, Bots ML, Beulens JW, Geleijnse JM, Witteman JC, Grobbee DE, Peeters PH, van der Schouw YT. Data on the effect of vitamin K intake on coronary heart disease (CHD) risk, however, are scarce. To examine the relationship between dietary vitamins K(1) and K(2) intake, and its subtypes, and the incidence of CHD. METHODS AND RESULTS: We used data from the Prospect- EPIC cohort consisting of 1. Intake of vitamin K and other nutrients was estimated with a food frequency questionnaire. Multivariate Cox proportional hazards models were used to analyse the data. After a mean+/- SD follow- up of 8. CHD. Mean vitamin K(1) intake was 2. K(2) intake was 2. After adjustment for traditional risk factors and dietary factors, we observed an inverse association between vitamin K(2) and risk of CHD with a Hazard Ratio (HR) of 0. This association was mainly due to vitamin K(2) subtypes MK- 7, MK- 8 and MK- 9. Vitamin K(1) intake was not significantly related to CHD. ![]() ![]() THANK YOU TO THE PEOPLE / ORGANISATIONS THAT MADE A TANGIBLE DIFFERENCE TO THE MOON SHADOW WALES CHALLENGE.
